15 tips to overcome submissive urination

Submissive urination is a dog's uncontrollable, instinctive reaction to the presence of another dog or human that they feel is superior or is intimidating to them. It is a subconscious response that cannot be controlled. It is not a housebreaking issue, although it is more likely to happen when the bladder is full. It can often be a reaction to a specific action such as putting a leash on the dog or simply leaning down to stroke him.

Student Question

Submissive urination problem

My daughter has a ten-month-old black cocker spaniel. She has a submissive urination problem, like all female cocker spaniels. My own cocker spaniel has outgrown this problem. However, my daughter's cocker is getting worse. She has a six-year-old boy and four-year-old girl and a four-year-old viszla. My daughter's cocker Ginny is now urinating in her crate. She urinates if you talk to her, if the kids play with her, and even if her husband reaches down to pet her. My daughter has tried everything and is ready to get rid of the puppy.

What is territorial marking and how to stop it?

Let's face it, dogs are territorial animals by nature. They like to protect their territory, their family, and their belongings. Territorial marking is different from urination because it is only a small amount to make other dogs aware that this is their territory. When people notice that their dog has been marking around the house, it is not usually done out of spite, but out of insecurity.

How often should a dog urinate?

My Australian Shepherd is a wonderful girl (she's a therapy dog). My only problem is on long drives (2 days) she will go 12 - 15 hours without urinating. When I stop for gas, I walk her. I walk her in the morning outside the hotel and again before we leave as well as soon as we stop prior to checking in and again before bedtime. Often she usually goes without urinating for twelve or more hours. How do I ensure she relieves herself? She is always well hydrated.
