Before You Bring Your Puppy Home

There are a number of things to think about, purchases to be made and tasks to be performed before returning home with your puppy. Here is a checklist to keep you on track, you will not need all of them!

Things to have at your disposal or possibly purchase:

Dog bed and bedding
Outside kennel or shelter and warm blankets or bedding
Movable cushion or blanket for inside the house for your puppy to relax on wherever you are
Crate
Suitable chew toys
Treats
Dog food
Dog food bowl and water bowl
Leash
Collar
Toilet pads
Cleaning spray
Grooming tools such as nail clippers, hair brush, flea comb, shampoo

Safety proof your house:

While making anything 100% safe it is worth taking a few minutes to think through some of the dangers that your puppy could face around the home.

Swimming pool, ponds and sources of water should be out-of-bounds. Puppies can drown easily if they fall into deep water
Electrical cables should be moved away around the back of desks out of range from your puppy, they seem to love chewing cables. Another option is to buy the cable covers that are hard plastic and puppies can’t chew through

Use baby gates to close down certain areas of the house creating no go zones. Baby gates are a fantastic way to teach your puppy to be on its own for a few minutes until you return from another room.

All cleaning products should be moved out-of-the-way and kept where they can’t be accessed

Heavy objects that may fall when pushed should be repositioned or moved out-of-the-way

Remove valuable and small objects from the floor

Make sure that toilet seats are down especially if you are isolating in the toilet or bathroom

Another consideration is whether your trash bin is up to the task, possibly turning it around to make it harder to access will buy you a few months!
